My Anuradhapura Travel Guide – A Local’s Experience and Best Tips (2026)

Welcome to Anuradhapura, my hometown and one of the most sacred cities in Sri Lanka. I was born and raised here, and for more than 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of living among ancient temples, peaceful lakes, and timeless history.

Through this guide, I want to share my personal experiences and local travel tips to help you explore Anuradhapura like someone who truly knows and loves this city. Whether you’re visiting for religious reasons, historical interest, or simply to experience the beauty of Sri Lankan culture — you’ll find something truly unforgettable here.

🏛️ Discovering the Sacred City

Anuradhapura is filled with centuries-old temples and Buddhist heritage sites. Every stupa tells a story, and each pathway feels connected to the island’s ancient spirit.

Some of the must-visit places include:

  • Ruwanwelisaya – The most iconic stupa, glowing beautifully at sunrise or under the full moon.
  • Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi – The sacred Bo Tree, believed to be the oldest living tree planted by humans. Visiting here brings a sense of peace that words can’t describe.
  • Jetavanaramaya & Abhayagiriya – Massive, awe-inspiring stupas that once stood among the tallest structures in the ancient world.
  • Samadhi Buddha Statue – A perfect example of calm and spiritual balance.
  • Isurumuniya Temple – Famous for its carvings and quiet riverside setting.

🌅 Local Tip: Visit the temples early morning or late evening when the sunlight is soft and the crowds are fewer. You’ll experience the real serenity of Anuradhapura.

🌿 Hidden Gems Only Locals Know

Beyond the main heritage sites, Anuradhapura has many quiet, lesser-known spots that visitors often miss:

  • Thisa Wewa – My favorite place to watch the sunset. The light reflecting on the water is magical.
  • Local Food Spots – Try a traditional rice and curry meal – search out best restaurants in Anuradhapura
  • Evening Tea Culture – Stop by a small kadé for milk tea; it’s where locals relax and chat after work.
