🏛️ Discovering the Sacred City
Anuradhapura is filled with centuries-old temples and Buddhist heritage sites. Every stupa tells a story, and each pathway feels connected to the island’s ancient spirit.
Some of the must-visit places include:
- Ruwanwelisaya – The most iconic stupa, glowing beautifully at sunrise or under the full moon.
- Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi – The sacred Bo Tree, believed to be the oldest living tree planted by humans. Visiting here brings a sense of peace that words can’t describe.
- Jetavanaramaya & Abhayagiriya – Massive, awe-inspiring stupas that once stood among the tallest structures in the ancient world.
- Samadhi Buddha Statue – A perfect example of calm and spiritual balance.
- Isurumuniya Temple – Famous for its carvings and quiet riverside setting.

- Thisa Wewa – My favorite place to watch the sunset. The light reflecting on the water is magical.

Anuradhapura is best explored at a relaxed pace. Once you arrive, you can easily get around using:

- By Train from Colombo Fort Railway Station – Public Transport

- Route 87 (via E03 – Colombo–Katunayake Expressway):
Colombo – Katunayake – Negombo – Chilaw – Puttalam – Nochchiyagama – Anuradhapura – Vavuniya / Jaffna (you may need to get off from Anuradhapura) - Route 15-1-1 / EX-04 (via E04 – Central Expressway):
Colombo – Kadawatha – Nittambuwa – Pasyala – Mirigama – Kurunegala – Dambulla – Kekirawa – Maradankadawala or Thalawa – Anuradhapura (⚠️ Please note: This route should not be confused with Route 15 buses operating to Vavuniya or Jaffna, as those services do not pass through Anuradhapura) - Route 04 (via E03 – Colombo–Katunayake Expressway):
Colombo – Katunayake – Negombo – Chilaw – Puttalam – Nochchiyagama – Anuradhapura or Mannar (you may need to get off from Anuradhapura) - Route 57 (Ella Rd) (via E04 – Central Expressway):

🚆 Travel by Train – Public Transport – Important Notice (2026)
⚠️ Train services to Anuradhapura are currently restricted due to railway renovations following damage caused by the DITWAH Cyclone.
🔴 Official Railway Notice:
- The Maho – Anuradhapura section will be temporarily closed from 19 January 2026
- The Maho – Omanthai section will be completely closed from 26 January 2026
🚫 As a result, direct train services to Anuradhapura are not operating during this period.
For a scenic alternative, trains run daily from Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura Railway Station.

🍛 Food & Culture
Anuradhapura’s food culture reflects its simple, traditional lifestyle. Try:
- Local rice & curry for lunch (with jackfruit curry if in season!)
- Kiri Bath (milk rice) with lunu miris in the morning
- A cup of milk tea in the evening — it’s the city’s favorite daily ritual.
You’ll also find small family restaurants that serve homely meals for a very reasonable price.
